Sclerotherapy for Spider and Small Varicose Veins

The Vein & Vascular Clinic at The Jackson Clinic provides treatment for venous diseases and a wide range of circulatory conditions. There is now another procedure available at the clinic: Asclera®, which improves the appearance of visible spider veins and small varicose veins.

What are spider veins?

  • Very small, fine, red or blue veins (≤ 1 mm in diameter)
  • Lie close to the surface
  • May resemble a thin red line, tree branches, or spider patterns
  • Visible on the legs
  • May cover small or large areas

What are small varicose veins?

  • Small blood vessels (1-3 mm in diameter) also known as feeder veins or reticular veins
  • May enlarge due to increased pressure in the vein or from weakened vein valves
  • Can appear alone or with spider veins

Spider and small varicose veins can appear due to a variety of risk factors:

  • Heredity: If other family members have spider or varicose veins, you are at higher risk of developing them.
  • Age: Over time, the valves in your veins become weaker.
  • Gender: Women are more likely to develop these conditions.
  • Hormonal changes: Drastic hormonal fluctuations can affect your veins.
  • Pregnancy: Increased circulating blood volume during pregnancy may cause enlarged veins in the legs.
  • Extra weight/obesity: Being overweight can put additional pressure on the veins.
  • Prolonged sitting or standing: During periods of inactivity, blood flow is reduced.
  • Venous conditions: Issues with vein structure and performance may increase your risk.

What are my options to treat spider and small varicose veins?

Although spider and small varicose veins do not usually cause physical symptoms, their visible appearance can often cause feelings of shame or self-consciousness in those who develop them.

If you are ready to stop hiding your legs, the Vein & Vascular Clinic is now offering sclerotherapy, a method of treatment used since the 1930s. Sclerotherapy is often the first choice to reduce the appearance of unwanted spider veins on the legs and is considered both safe and effective.

Asclera®

Asclera® (polidocanol) is one form of sclerotherapy; it is FDA approved and has been in use for over a decade to treat varicose and spider veins in the lower extremities. It consists of a solution that also contains anesthetic (sensation-reducing) properties.

During your office visit, your healthcare provider will inject the solution directly into the affected vein, which causes it to seal shut, eventually reabsorb into the body and, over time, fade from view entirely.

What kind of results could I expect from Asclera®?

In a clinical study, 88% of patients were satisfied or very satisfied with the results they saw from Asclera®.

The average patient can expect to see improvements around 18 weeks after their last treatment, though some will require multiple injections for optimal results.

Individual results will vary depending on factors such as vein severity, skin tone, and a number of treatments.

Talk to your healthcare provider about whether Asclera® is the right method to treat your spider or small varicose veins.
