Laserscope
Healing With Light
The gentle laser light is computer-guided and penetrates the skin while keeping it intact until it reaches its target - either a hair follicle (for hair removal) or a vessel (for leg vein treatment). The laser beam penetrates the skin without harming any surrounding tissues. Once the laser energy reaches the target, it is immediately absorbed. At this point, the energy of the laser is turned to heat which destroys the target, resulting in a change without any damage to the patient's skin. It then takes a short while for the hair or vessel to dissipate into the body.
Through the Lyra is a very new laser; it has been well received among the renowned researchers in the fields of dermatology and plastic surgery world wide. It is being used both in the United States and internationally. It has been cleared by the FDA for use in treating vascular lesions, veins and hair removal applications.
At the Jackson Clinic, all treatments are performed under the supervision of Board Certified physicians.
The Lyra for Hair Removal
Unlike electrolysis, which requires a needle to insert into each hair follicle, the laser system can be used to quickly treat large areas of the body. This is a safe and gentle method for removing unwanted hair without skin irritation, discoloration or inflammation associated with other lasers or hair removal methods.
What can I expect during the treatment?
Most patients experience a stinging, burning sensation when a laser pulse is delivered. To reduce discomfort, a cooling system automatically removes heat from the surface of your skin before, during and after the laser exposure. A topical anesthetic cream may be applied to sensitive areas.
How many treatments will be needed?
The number of treatments required to obtain optimal results varies with hair density, hair color, skin types, the treatment area and your hair growth cycle. The density of your hair and its growth cycle are affected by many things such as your age, ethnic background, hormones or medications. Laser treatments impair the growth capacity of hair follicles when they are in a growth cycle at the time of treatment. All hair follicles are not active at the same time. Depending upon the growth cycle of the follicles when the treatment is applied, multiple treatments spaced a few weeks apart may be required to obtain the desired effect.
What should I expect following the treatment?
Once the treatment is complete, the area exposed to the laser is cleansed and you are free to return to your normal routine. Some patients may experience a slight reddening around hair follicles following the treatment which typically disappear within a few minutes. It is always recommended to avoid sun exposure and to use sunscreen following the laser treatments.
Razor Bumps
What is Pseudo-Folliculitis?
Pseudo-folliculitis (PF), commonly known as shaving bumps, is an inflammatory condition, which is widespread among individuals with thick curly hair. As the hair grows out of the skin, it curls and re-enters the skin. The skin reacts to it as a foreign object and becomes inflamed and irritated, creating bumps and discoloration. Often hairs start curling even before these grow out of the skin, creating in-grown hairs. These bumps become quite large, causing discomfort to the patient.
The Lyra is the first laser FDA cleared for hair removal in all skin types. Lyra is the first treatment FDA cleared for the treatment of shaving bumps. Prior to Lyra, dark complected and tanned patients could not be treated with a laser due to the high absorbency of light in the pigment of the skin. Lyra's low absorption in pigment makes it an ideal treatment, achieving outstanding results while maintaining the normal appearance of the skin.
Visible Leg Veins
What can I expect during the treatment?
You will experience a stinging burning sensation during the treatment, which resolves immediately after the treatment is over. In some cases, you may prefer to use topical anesthetic cream, which may completely eliminate any discomfort.
How may treatments will I need?
Depending on the severity of the veins, you may require between one and three treatments six weeks apart. The treatment is performed on the existing vessels, diminishing or completely eliminating their appearance. However, the developments of the new veins cannot be prevented, if your body tends to develop vascular problems you will most likely come back for additional treatments.
What should I expect after the procedure?
The appearance of the treated vessels will dramatically change, turning from blue and purple into light red. Some of the vessels may bulge, however, any inflammation will disappear within a couple of hours. The redness of the treated vessels will gradually disappear as the healing process occurs, which may take anywhere between 2 and 6 weeks depending on the severity of the veins.
The post-operative treatment regimen may include wearing support hose, avoiding medication containing aspirin and wearing sunscreen. Make sure to discuss these options with your laser practitioner prior to the treatment.
Starpulse Laser for lesions
What is a vascular lesion?
Vascular lesions are the areas of overgrown or enlarged blood vessels. These vary in color from red to purple and range in size from a spot to large areas of the body. Seen as visible veins, spider veins or port wine stains, they are quite common and are either congenital, acquired through overexposure to the sun, a result of oral contraceptives, hormone therapy or the natural process of aging.
What are pigmented lesions?
Pigmented lesions are light tan to brown and black areas of discoloration of the skin . In these areas, the body has collected more pigment, creating age spots, liver spots, freckles and brown birthmarks.
What can I expect during the treatment?
Patients feel virtually nothing up to a sensation of a hot pinprick for a fraction of a second. It is so gentle that local anesthesia is seldom necessary. Treatment consists of placing a small handpiece or scanner against the surface of the skin and activating the laser. Because of the brightness of the laser light, you will be asked to wear some form of eye protection.
What should I expect after Laser treatment?
You will experience a slight redness in the treated area which will go away within a few days. Side effects are uncommon and usually minimal. Your physician will give you full instructions for skin care after treatment. It is recommended that sunscreens be used, especially to help avoid getting these lesions in the future.
