Magnetic Resonance Imaging Machine [MRI]

Vital in Disease Detection and Patient Treatment

The MRI is used as a diagnostic tool by physicians. This extremely effective machine uses a magnetic field and radio waves to show images of the inner body and any pathological changes.

All patients of The Jackson Clinic are now able to have an MRI exam at The Jackson Clinic's West Forrest Campus. This convenient location, already familiar to Jackson Clinic patients, will allow for timely examinations, often with same day service.

"The MRI machine is an extremely important tool for the diagnosis and treatment management of our patients," Carl Rudd, Jackson Clinic Administrator, said. "The acquisition of a MRI machine by The Jackson Clinic allows us to better serve our patients' healthcare needs."

The MRI is used in a wide variety of medical circumstances. Physicians order an MRI scan as a method for early disease detection, pathological changes or the display of congenital abnormalities in tissues and organs. An MRI is effective in every area of the body. Blood vessels and flow, heart diseases, functional mapping of the brain, examination of the spinal cord, ear and eye diseases, disc herniation, liver, pancreas, kidney and gall bladder abnormalities, tumors, joint diseases and soft tissue abnormalities are just a few of the reasons an MRI scan may be prescribed. It is an especially useful tool for oncologists in the treatment of cancers.

Patients scheduled for a MRI exam may continue their normal diet, medication and activity prior to this exam. A thorough medical history will be taken and reviewed by the prescribing physician and the technologist. During the exam, which takes approximately 30 minutes, the patient is asked to lie quietly still as the scanner records images of the inner body. This non-invasive scan is performed without the harmful effects of radiation because it uses magnetic principles. There is no post-procedure recovery time and patients may return to their regular routine immediately.

The Cross Sectional Imaging Center

The Cross Sectional Imaging Center offers physicians access to cross section images through Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), a multi-channel, multi-detector CT Scanner and Nuclear Medicine Cameras.

This on-site diagnostic and imaging equipment allows The Jackson Clinic to offer patients quicker and most convenient quality care. If a physician wants to order an MRI or CT Scan for a patient, it can often be done the same day and without the patient having to leave the building.

The Jackson Clinic's CT (Computed Tomography) Scanner uses x-rays to create images of sections or areas of the body. Much more sophisticated than a normal x-ray image, the CT scan distinguish between different types of soft tissue. Multiple CT images can be combined to produce a three-dimensional display.

The Nuclear Medicine Camera allows patients to be scanned using radiopharmaceuticals to provide physicians unique diagnostic information about the function of many organs. This information is also used in the managements, treatment and prevention of cardiac disease and disorders, as well as the detection of bone fractures and diseases states.

The Cross Sectional Imaging Center is located at The Jackson Clinic's main campus at 616 West Forest Avenue.

Women’s Imaging Department

The Women’s Imaging Department allows all of your tests to be performed within the Comprehensive Breast Care Center. The Department centralizes many of the diagnostic services offered by the clinic for women and incorporates the latest technology in testing procedures. Patients can have tests done on new digital mammography equipment and a new stereotactic biopsy system for early detection of breast cancer, or they can screen for the presence of osteoporosis with the new digital bone density testing equipment.

Digital Mammography Equipment

Traditional mammograms, which use X-rays, have been replaced at The Jackson Clinic with digital mammography equipment. Digital mammograms take digital images of the breast, allowing doctors to magnify and change the contrast of an image, resulting in improved chances of detecting breast cancer early. The digital technology also allows the mammographers to quickly see the quality of the image and redo it if need be. The Jackson Clinic’s mammography staff is accredited through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

Stereotactic Biopsy System

Should a mammogram show a suspicious lump, the next step is a biopsy. The stereotactic biopsy is the most comfortable and least invasive way to have a breast biopsy. A stereotactic biopsy uses a computer-guided needle to take a pinpoint sampling of tissue with the help of a digital image of the breast. In the past, patients underwent a two to four hour surgery for a biopsy, which required stitches and often caused scarring. The stereotactic biopsy system requires no stitches, leaves no scarring and only takes 30 minutes to an hour to complete.

Digital Bone Density Equipment

Bone density tests help doctors to diagnose the presence or risk of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is caused when bones become thin and brittle, which increases the risk of a fracture. Many patients do not realize that they have osteoporosis until a fracture occurs. The earlier osteoporosis is found, the more likely future fractures can be prevented. With this in mind, getting a bone density test is now easier than ever with the new DEXA bone density equipment. DEXA, or Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry, uses low energy X-rays to measure the density of bones, muscle and body fat. The procedure is quick, painless and highly accurate. It scans the spine and hips because the bone density there is indicative of bone density elsewhere in the body.
