Prostate Cancer Overview

getty_rf_photo_of_man_on_exam_tableOne of the most common cancers occurring in men, with more than 200,000 new cases per year, prostate cancer typically has a slow growth rate while it is still confined to the prostate gland.  However, once out of the prostate, cancer can spread quickly and decrease the likelihood of effective treatment.  That is why it is crucial for men to receive regular prostate exams.  When prostate cancer is detected early, there is a much higher chance for successful treatment and recovery.

The prostate is a small gland in the male reproductive system that produces semen.  When the prostate become cancerous, patients have trouble urinating, experience decreased force in the urine stream, blood in urine or semen, leg swelling and discomfort in the pelvic area.

The cause of prostate cancer is unknown, but groups particularly at risk are men over 65, African-American men, the obese or those with a family history of prostate cancer.

Although regular prostate exams to screen for cancer are most important for men age 50 and over, men of all ages should be aware of the symptoms of prostate cancer and know when you should call your doctor.  While the following symptoms may be symptomatic of prostate cancer, they may also indicate a different condition.  So, if you experience these symptoms, call your doctor.

  • Weak or interrupted urine flow
  • Frequent urination
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Trouble urinating
  • Pain or burning with urination
  • Blood in the urine or semen
  • Chronic pain in the back, hips or pelvis
