General surgeons perform surgical procedures on all of the body systems. Thoracic surgeons focus on treating diseases affecting the organs inside the thorax (the chest) including the lungs, chest wall, esophagus and diaphragm, excluding the heart. Vascular surgeons focus on surgical interventions of arteries and veins, as well as the peripheral vascular system.
